Grigori Frid: New Version of “The Diary of Anne Frank” Given World Premiere

The Russian composer Grigori Frid wrote his mono-opera in 1969 based on the diary text of Anne Frank. His work “The Diary of Anne Frank” presents a shattering chronicle of the Jewish girl’s life situation; she lived hidden with her family from 1942 to 1944 in flight from the Nazi regime. Grigori Frid selected individual aspects that deal far more with Anne’s entirely subjective perception than with the outward circumstances.

Grigori Frid died three years ago in Moscow on 22 September 2012, exactly on his 97th birthday. Shortly before his death, he added a third ensemble combination for his opera to the two variants already in existence: this new combination is for voice, piano, double bass and percussion. The new version will now be given its world premiere on 1 October 2015 at the Ljubljana Opera in the Slovenian language (translation by Milan Jesih). The director will be Rocc, a dramaturge and director born in 1979 in Slovenia and working under this pseudonym; the Glasbeni Trio will perform under the musical direction of Aleksandar Spasić.

This is a co-production of the SNG Opera and Ballet of Ljubljana and the Slovenian Chamber Music Theatre. Further performances will be given at the Ljubljana Opera on 2, 12, 14, 20, and 21 October 2015.

On 22 October 2015 the production from Ljubljana given its Italian premiere in Pordenone (Italian adaption: Rino Alessi), followed by the Norwegian premiere in Bergen on 30 October 2015 at the Den Nationale Scene. The German premiere takes place on 9 November 2015 in Hechingen (Old Synagogue) presented by the Reutlinger Kammeroper (Reutlingen Chamber Opera).
