CD: Sofia Gubaidulina – “Complete Guitar Works”

The CD “Sofia Gubaidulina: Repentance” was released just last year by the Swedish label BIS, including the work “Repentance” for violoncello, three guitars and double bass composed in 2008 as well as the Serenade for solo guitar of 1960 and the chamber work “Sotto voce” for viola, double bass and two guitars of 2010/13. This CD lacks the fourth work by the Russian composer including the guitar, the “Toccata” for solo guitar composed in 1969. Now the American guitarist David Tanenbaum proudly presents a complete recording of all the guitar works of Sofia Gubaidulina with the support of the guitarists Thomas Viloteau, Marc Teichholz and Paul Wright as well as the cellist Peter Wyrick, violist Jodi Levitz and double bassist Scott Pingel, also containing this striking “Toccata” on a world premiere recording. This very lively piece, in which many of the staccato notes are struck very close to the bridge, is, at three minutes, just as dense and concentrated as the Serenade.

The work “Sotto voce” revised in 2013, the premiere recording of which appeared on BIS in 2014, is now joined by a second recording in a rather different interpretation. "Sotto voce" was originally composed at the instigation of the double bassist Alexander Suslin, who is a close friend of Sofia Gubaidulina and also plays those works of hers originally written for the cello on the double bass. “The combination fascinated me with its dark colour and the possibility of creating a contrast between a muted, almost whispered ‘sotto-voce’ sound and that special kind of expression that belongs to the low instruments,” explains Gubaidulina.
