German Premiere: Gubaidulina‘s “Two Paths” arranged by Johannes X. Schachtner

The German premiere of Sofia Gubaidulina’s concerto work “Two Paths” (original for two violas and orchestra) in an adaptation by the Munich composer Johannes X. Schachtner for two violoncelli and orchestra, will be presented at the 2015 Beethovenfest at the concert “Religiöse Kraft” (Religious Power) on 11 September 2015. This version was made for the Seoul International Music Festival in 2014, at which Julius and Hyun-Jung Berger (violoncelli) performed it with the Korean Orchestra on 26 May 2014.

The Berger Duo will now introduce this version of “Two Paths” in Germany as well, this time together with the Beethoven Orchester Bonn conducted by Christof Prick (Stefan Blunier is absent in consequence of being ill).

Johannes X. Schachtner about his transcription of “Two Paths”:
“Arrangements by different composers other than the original composer are seldom to be found in contemporary music. Every little alteration made to the musical parameters modifies the structure of the composition and the specific language of the composition. Naturally, it was my intention to create a coherent version for two violoncellos. On the one hand, the structure and gesture of Sofia Gubaidulina's music should be maintained, on the other hand the character of the cellos should be taken into consideration. The orchestra score remains untouched. For the necessary adjustments to be made, I had to transpose the cello parts bar by bar, or sometimes even note by note, in order to explore all the soundscape possibilities of the cellos and to make sure that they integrate well into the orchestra score as a whole. I am very happy that Sofia Gubaidulina could hear the new cello parts before the premiere and was very pleased with the result.”
