6th Hamburg Chamber Music Festival with Focus on Grigori Frid

The very successful Russian Chamber Music Festival, held annually in early autumn in Hamburg, is known to many. Starting this year, the nearly four-week event will bear a new name: Hamburger Kammermusikfest (Hamburg Chamber Music Festival). This is intended to express the fact that this is by no means a festival concerned exclusively with Russian repertoire, although a special focus will continue to be placed on this music, as before.

The 6th Hamburg Chamber Music Festival will be held from 8 September until 4 October 2015 under the artistic direction of the pianist and Music Academy Professor Elisaveta Blumina. After this Russian musician expressed her passion for the Shostakovich contemporary Mieczyslaw Weinberg last year, and is now occupied with releasing a complete recording of his piano works, the oeuvre of Grigori Frid is at the centre of focus this year.

Frid (1915-2012) is also the composer of the mono-opera “The Diary of Anne Frank”, which is frequently performed and has been translated into many languages. Blumina has the following to say about this composer:
“My first encounter with Frid‘s music was his Viola Sonata. I was fascinated by it and immediately ordered the score from Sikorski Verlag. The more I played it, the more his music pleased me. My mother, the pianist Mara Mednik, whom I asked to look at his chamber works and play them, was immediately enthusiastic.”
