International Weinberg Society Founded

Weinberg society

It has just been announced that an “International Weinberg Society” has been founded, with its headquarters in Augsburg. It was initiated, above all, in order to promote the music of the Shostakovich contemporary Mieczysław Weinberg, who died in 1996, and to draw more attention to his oeuvre than has previously been the case. In addition, musicians are to be encouraged to perform Weinberg’s compositions and make them known to a wide public. The widow of Dmitri Shostakovich, Irina Shostakovich, is the Society’s prominent Honorary President.

The objective of the International Weinberg Society is, declaredly, to organise concerts, lectures, exhibitions and multi-disciplinary events concentrating on Weinberg’'s music and works, his close connection to Shostakovich and his importance for the music of the 20th century. The aim is to contribute financial resources for recorded productions of his music, as well as for the publication and translation of articles and books about his life. Many works by Weinberg are in our catalogues, including the operas “The Idiot”, “Lady Magnesia” and “The Portrait”, as well as the Violin Concerto.
