“O Come, Holy Ghost” by Sofia Gubaidulina Given World Premiere

During the course of Sofia Gubaidulina’s residency with the Staatskapelle Dresden as “Capell-Compositrice”, her new vocal-symphonic work “O Come, Holy Ghost” will be given its world premiere on 18 April 2015 in Dresden. The vocal soloists Sophie Karthäuser (soprano) and Georg Zeppenfeld (bass) will present the new work by the Russian composer together with the Staatskapelle Dresden and the MDR Rundfunkchor under the direction of Andres Mustonen at the Frauenkirche.

In 1959, a Russian commission found that Sofia Gubaidulina was on the “wrong track”, but none other than Dmitri Shostakovich recommended to the up-and-coming composer to continue pursuing precisely this “wrong track”. It was the right advice at the right time; by now, this composer has long been considered one of the most important composers in the history of music. “O Come, Holy Ghost” for soprano, bass, mixed choir and orchestra was commissioned by the Staatskapelle Dresden and the Frauenkirche Foundation of Dresden, and is dedicated to the conductor Andres Mustonen.
