Marius Felix Lange‘s “Snow White” in Switzerland

Marius Felix Lange’s opera for children and adults entitled “Snow White”, which received its world premiere in 2011 in Cologne, was given its French premiere in 2012 under the French title “Blanche-Neige” in a production by Waut Koeken at the Opéra national du Rhin in Colmar, performed by the Orchestre philharmonique de Strasbourg conducted by Vincent Montei.

The Municipal Theatre Equilibre-Nuithonie in Fribourg has now taken up this children’s opera in its repertoire, and will perform it on three days in a production by Julien Chavaz in French with the company of the Opéra Louise. The Swiss premiere will take place on 22 April 2015, performed by the Nouvel Ensemble Contemporain (NEC) under the direction of Jérôme Kuhn.

The further performances will follow on 25 April (5 PM) and 26 April 2015 (3 PM) at the Theatre Equilibre-Nuithonie.

In the opera “Snow White”, Lange (who wrote the libretto himself) tells the famous fairytale with colourful and imaginative means without losing the thread of the Brothers Grimm original. The well-known personnel of the story is expanded with agreeable-absurd figures like courtiers and forest dwellers. The seven dwarfs, craftsmen in the best dwarf tradition, have been given individual abilities. One of them is, as in the Grimm original, actually a miner; the others practice professions such as jewellery craftsman, blacksmith, glass-blower, carpenter and inventor. In Lange's version, the different capabilities of the dwarfs are what frees Snow White from death.
