New Schnittke CD

To celebrate the 80th birthday of the Russian composer Alfred Schnittke, who died in 1998, the pianist Denys Proshayev has made a CD recording dedicated exclusively to this composer. The Bavarian Broadcasting Company has commented that this is an “exciting Schnittke homage that reveals lesser known aspects.” This remark especially refers to the recording of the so-called “Gogol Suite”, stage music based on motifs of the writer Nikolai Gogol presented here by Proshayev together with the pianist Nadia Mokhtari in an adaptation for two pianos by Valery Borovikov. Another highly interesting work is “Five Aphorisms” for piano composed in 1990. The principal work of this new release, however, is the Concerto for Piano and Strings, one of the central works in the oeuvre of Alfred Schnittke. Proshayev has dedicated his CD to the memory of his teacher Vladimir Krainev, who performed the world premiere of Schnittke's Concerto for Piano and Strings in 1979.
