“Das Gemeindekind” – World Premiere of the New Singspiel by Gerald Resch

Resch - Das Gemeindekind UA

The Austrian composer Gerald Resch has recently completed his first work in the area of music theatre. His singspiel is entitled “Das Gemeindekind” (“The Community Child”), based on the novel of the same name by Marie Ebner-Eschenbach and will be given its world premiere on 5 March 2015 at the Vienna Schauspielhaus performed by soloists of the Schauspielhaus and the Ensemble PHACE under the musical direction of Mathilde Hoursiangou. The libretto was written by Anne Habermehl and the director is Rudolf Frey.

Concerning the content of “Das Gemeindekind”:
“The aristocratic Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach, once characterised as Austria’s most important authoress, published her central work, the novel ‘Das Gemeindekind’, in 1887. At a time when efforts were being made by the social democracy on behalf of the industrial proletariat, she placed the disadvantages of underprivileged rural people at the centre of focus. Even though the physical appearance of poverty in ‘Das Gemeindekind’ is ugly and the humanity of the people concerned seems slight, the novel is not to be accounted for by the principles of naturalism. The situation of the individual is not only a consequence of social conditions in a deterministic sense, but more a product of economical conditions. Anne Habermehl’s ‘Das Gemeindekind’ is not an update of Ebner-Eschenbach’s work, nor a stage adaptation of the novel, but rather a new creation in the form of a libretto. Similarly to Lars von Trier’s film Dogville, a model case is played through here: the eponymous hero Pavel becomes an outcast due to his familial origins; his descent into criminality is immanent. Habermehl pursues the question as to what happens to a community child when the erstwhile community model no longer exists. How can such a subject be described when belief in pedagogical narrative forms has become obsolete? Gerald Resch, one of the essential protagonists of Austrian contemporary music, has set the libretto as a singspiel especially for the Schauspielhaus ensemble”.

Follow-up concerts at the Vienna Schauspielhaus will take place on 6 March, 20 March, 21 March, 31 March, 1 April, 10 April, 11 April, 18 April and 21 April 2015.
