Johannes X. Schachtner: New Vocal Work “we leave to-night”

The new vocal work by the Bavarian composer Johannes X. Schachtner is further proof of the powerful incentives that literary sources can exert on contemporary composers. The singers Brigitte Bayer, Monika Lichtenegger and Martina Koppelstetter, accompanied at the piano by Eva Pons, will perform the world premiere of Schachtner’s new work “we leave to-night” for two sopranos, alto and piano in Munich on 5 March 2015. This work is a setting of a poem by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

The composer himself reports on the impulse to create this work as follows, also providing insights into its structure:
“I discovered the poetry of F. Scott Fitzgerald through reading his novel fragment ‘The Love of the Last Tycoon’. When asked to contribute to a special song recital with three female voices and piano, I recalled Fitzgerald's poem ‘We Leave To-Night’. My setting of this poem is characterised by farewell gestures full of longing which are, however, repeatedly interrupted by nostalgic reminiscences and powerful outbursts. Since the work is a homage to the writer of the ‘Jazz Age’ of the 1920s and ‘30s, I used compositional techniques and harmonic progressions that remind one of the music of that era - music that is powerful and melancholy at the same time.”
