Johannes X. Schachtner‘s “Fourteen – Tableau dramatique” given World Premiere

The Rosenheim Music Society will perform the German Requiem of Johannes Brahms, composed during the time when Rosenheim was elevated to the status of a town 150 years ago, as part of the jubilee celebrations of that city on 23 November 2014. Another contribution to this jubilee is from the composer Johannes X. Schachtner who composed “Fourteen – Tableau dramatique” for soprano, baritone, small women’s choir, mixed choir and orchestra to poems by Georg Trakl. This work will be given its world premiere at this concert. The choir and orchestra of the Rosenheim Music Society will be conducted by Thomas Mandl. The soloists will be Katharina Maria Bauer (soprano) and Horst Lamnek (baritone).

Johannes X. Schachtner comments on his work as follows:
“Already when I began to occupy myself compositionally with the highly expressive poetry of Georg Trakl, leading to the ‘Miniatures’ for violin and piano, my plan to present a ‘classical’ setting once day was gradually maturing.
‘Fourteen – Tableau dramatique’ for soli, choir and orchestra groups together three poems from different years – it would be almost presumptuous to speak of life phases in view of the poet's life span of only 27 years - to form an outline from the poet's life, simply a chronology of destruction.
Formal and structural reminiscences of the rite of the Catholic Requiem Mass have repeatedly crept in, but heterogeneity prevails overall – especially at the beginning, when the verses of the ‘Romanze zur Nacht’ (Romance in the Night) sound in multiple layers over each other.
After a song by the solo violin similar to ‘In Paradisum’ and the setting of the poem ‘Klage’ (Lament), the work culminates in the words ‘weißer Schlaf’ (white sleep) before it appears to implode.”
