Sofia Gubaidulina: Premieres in Belgium and the Netherlands

Two works by the Russian composer Sofia Gubaidulina will receive their respective local premieres in Belgium and the Netherlands on 9 November 2014.

Gubaidulina‘s “Why?” for flute, clarinet and string orchestra will be given its Dutch premiere at the November Music Festival in Den Bosch, performed by soloists Peter Verduyn Lunel (flute) and Olivier Patey (clarinet) together with the Amsterdam Sinfonietta conducted by Candida Thompson.
The double concerto “Why?” is a commissioned work by the music festivals of Emilia Romagna, Ljubljana, Ravello and the Canary Islands, by Festival Pianistico di Brescia e Bergamo, Fondazione Arena di Verona, Staatskapelle Dresden and the Amsterdam Sinfonietta supported by The Eduard van Beinum Foundation and has given its world premiere on 22 July 2014 in Forlì (Italy).

At the same time, the Brussels Philharmonic will present the Belgian premiere of the orchestral work “The Rider on the White Horse” at a concert given by the Klara Festival in Brussels in memory of the beginning of World War I in Belgium. The Estonian conductor Andres Mustonen will direct the performance. This orchestral work received its world premiere on 21 September 2002 during the course of the Gergiev Festival in Rotterdam.
“The Rider on the White Horse” is an orchestral extract from Sofia Gubaidulina‘s “St. John Passion” and “St. John Easter,” the “Intermedium” of which is incorporated into the work. Gubaidulina: “In the present orchestral work, however, the passion level is so condensed that it has been more or less melted down to a single point, a kind of turning point. (...)”.
