German Premiere: Marius Felix Lange‘s “The Canterville Ghost” in Berlin

In 2013 the composer Marius Felix Lange has taken up the material of Oscar Wilde‘s famous horror story the ”The Canterville Ghost“, in a new libretto by Michael Frowin, in response to a commission from the Zurich Opera. The premiere of the created opera in two acts “The Canterville Ghost” was premiered on 23 November 2013 at the Zurich Opera House.

The Komische Oper Berlin has now decided to take on the world premiere production from Zurich, and thus the German premiere of the Zurich staging by Jasmina Hadziahmetovic will take place on the stage of the Komische Oper on 2 November 2014.

Marius Felix Lange comments on his horror opera as follows: “In Oscar Wilde’s masterly tale, Virginia, only after a certain time and upon the urging of her betrothed, solves the secret surrounding the night in which the world-weary ghost found his longed-for peace, thanks to her help: ‘He allowed me to see what life is, and what death means, and why love is stronger than both.’
“This insight, in particular, means a great deal to Virginia in our version: here she is, Virginia, not, as in Oscar Wilde's story, part of the very practical and intact American family, but as the daughter of the (no less practically inclined) real estate entrepreneur Georg Bürkli from Zurich, a Swiss, and subjected to the plans of Frauke-Beeke Hansen, who is oriented towards profit and the spirit of the times. This slightly hysterical woman from Hamburg is not only Georg Bürkli’s assistant, but also, to Virginia’s great chagrin, his lover. And she has bad plans for Canterville (...).”

Further performances at the Komische Oper take place on 9.11., 13.11., 16.11., 28.11., 4.12., 7.12. and 26.12.2014.
