Sofia Gubaidulina‘s “Why?” and “The Rider on the White Horse” for the First Time in Belarus

Sofia Gubaidulina’s double concerto “Why?” is a commissioned work by the music festivals of Emilia Romagna, Ljubljana, Ravello and the Canary Islands, by Festival Pianistico di Brescia e Bergamo, Fondazione Arena di Verona, Staatskapelle Dresden and the Amsterdam Sinfonietta supported by The Eduard van Beinum Foundation. After amazing performances in Italy (world premiere on 22 July 2014 in Forlì), Slovenia and Mexico, “Why?” for flute, clarinet and string orchestra will be performed for the first time in Belarus.

On 1 October 2014 the soloists Massimo Mercelli (flute) and Riccardo Crocilla (clarinet) will be present the work together with the Young Symphony Orchestra of the Belarusian Academy of Music under the direction of Andres Mustonen in Minsk. In the concert Gubaidulina’s “The Rider on the White Horse” for orchestra also given its Belarusian premiere.

The orchestral work “The Rider on the White Horse” received its world premiere during the course of the Gergiev Festival in Rotterdam on 21 September 2002. It is an orchestral extract from her works “St. John Passion” and “St. John Easter,” the “Intermedium” of which is incorporated into the work. Gubaidulina: “In the present orchestral work, however, the passion level is so condensed that it has been more or less melted down to a single point, a kind of turning point. (...)”
