Austrian Premiere: Lera Auerbach’s “The Blind” at Theater an der Wien

The Theater an der Wien, which already presented the world premiere of Lera Auerbach’s “Gogol” (a grand opera with choir, numerous soloists and an enormous orchestral apparatus) on 15 November 2011, will be performing the Russian-American composer’s choral opera “The Blind” (in English) in January 2015 and will present the Austrian premiere on 17 January 2015.

Here, Lera Auerbach has used a nightmarish text by Maurice Maeterlinck, “Les Aveugles” (1890) as a model, and forcefully realised it: “The Blind” was created in 2001 as an a-cappella opera for twelve singers. No orchestra, no instruments are there to embed the voices; there are only twelve people, alone in the darkness.
