World Premiere: “SPIRAL” by Peter Ruzicka at Festival MDR Musiksommer

The artistic director, conductor and composer Peter Ruzicka has written a new work for the Leipzig Horn Quartet and the MDR Symphony Orchestra in response to a commission from the Central German Broadcasting Company (MDR) - it is entitled “SPIRAL” for horn quartet and orchestra.

This work, completed in 2013, will be given its world premiere on 15 August 2014, performed by the Leipzig Horn Quartet and the MDR Symphony Orchestra conducted by Ruzicka at the MDR Musiksommer in the Weimarhalle. In addition, the Fantasy in F minor for orchestra by Franz Schubert (adapted by Rolf Liebermann) and Robert Schumann’s Second Symphony will be performed at this concert entitled „Verliebt ins Horn“ (In Love with the Horn).

Peter Ruzicka comments “SPIRAL” as follows:
“My composition SPIRAL for horn quartet and orchestra is based on the idea that musical shapes acquire a state of gyration through repetition and discrepancy. They thus find their way, spiral-like, into a correspondingly higher level of perception. The ‘hearing view’ onto what has already sounded becomes the ‘subtext’ of the piece.
The work is cast in a tripartite form. Between two outer movements, very virtuoso for the soloistic horn quartet and the orchestra, there is a slow section leading into an increasingly eruptive cadenza including tympani and piano.
The subtitle ‘Concerto’ refers to the consistently dialogue-like relationship of the four soloists with the large orchestral formation.”
