Choir Work “The Expiration” by Daniel Smutny Given World Premiere in Essen

The new choral work “The Expiration” by Daniel Smutny will be given its world premiere at Essen Dom on 2 July 2014 as part of the concert entitled “VOICES III: Sacred and Profane”. The chamber choir of the Detmold Academy of Music will present this farewell chorale for a capella choir, directed by Anne Kohler.

The composer comments on his work as follows:
“’The Expiration’ is based on two atmospheric conceptions: one, in which the farewell is definitive – for example with emigration or a farewell to a beloved person who has died – and in which this special moment is accompanied by music, through farewell chorales as an escort with best wishes and hopes. The second conception is one of the musical movement of a swing waltz, such as by Bill Evans, in which time itself is flexible and becomes malleable – early in the morning in a jazz club of the 1960s. The musical language in ‘The Expiration’ lives to a certain extent from baroque affects which approach a certain poem of John Donne via the means of transportation ‘Bill Evans Waltz’, in which the farewell of two lovers appears as the death of separation, as the point in time after the conjoining kiss, and love as a momentary death, as a loss of the self. Linguistically and artistically entwined ambiguities, opulence and precision are what led me to this music through John Donne.”
