New Neumeier Ballet “Tatiana” by Lera Auerbach

None other than Peter I. Tchaikovsky chose the subject of “Eugene Onegin” by Alexander Pushkin for his opera of the same name, completed in 1878, creating a deeply moving drama of the unfulfilled love between the protagonist and the landowner’s daughter Tatiana. In those days, the romanticist gave his work the subtitle “Lyric Scenes”, thus underlining the fact that it was really about a psychological drama with many tender undertones. The Hamburg choreographer John Neumeier (together with the Moscow Stanislavsky Theatre), who already collaborated with the Russian-American composer Lera Auerbach in his ballet productions “Préludes CV” and the fairytale ballet “The Little Mermaid”, has now commissioned Lera Auerbach to create the ballet music for this famous subject. The world premiere of “Tatiana” is scheduled for 29 June 2014 at the Hamburg State Opera during the course of the Hamburg Ballet Days.

With Neumeier and Auerbach, however, Eugene Onegin is not at the centre of attention – he once refused the landowner’s daughter Tatiana and later bitterly regretted this step – but rather the female protagonist. Ever since the publication of Pushkin’s novel, Tatiana has been admired and venerated in Russia as a kind of Russian ideal. Fyodor Dostoyevsky, who had a particular passion for Pushkin, once wrote about this woman: “Tatiana is a strong person; she stands her ground firmly and surely. She is deeper than Onegin and naturally clever than he is. She can feel, just from her fine senses, where the truth lies and of what it consists. Perhaps it would have been better if Pushkin had named his novel after her – ‘Tatiana Larina’ and not after him – ‘Yevgeny Onegin’. She is the heroine, not he. She is an affirmative type of person, not a negative one like he is; she is a type of veritable beauty.”

Further performances of the ballet “Tatiana” have been planned for this year on 1 / 10 July, 11 / 14 and 20 November 2014 at the Hamburg State Opera. From May 2015 onwards further performances takes place in Hamburg. The Russian premiere will be given on 7 November 2014 at the Moscow Stanislavsky Theatre.
