New Chamber Opera: “Vivier: A Night Report” by Marko Nikodijevic

Nikodijevic - Vivier - Ein Nachprotokoll UA

The new chamber opera “Vivier: A Night Report” was composed in response to a commission from the Munich Biennale. It refers to Claude Vivier (a composer much admired by Marko Nikodijevic) who died in Paris in 1983. Nikodijevic already dedicated the ensemble piece “chambres de ténèbres / tombeau de claude vivier” to him in 2005. The new chamber opera will receive its world premiere on 7 May 2014 in Munich during the course of the Munich Biennale, and will be presented again on 15 May 2014 at the Braunschweig State Theatre by the Staatsorchester Braunschweig and vocal soloists directed by Sebastian Beckdorf.

Even the scoring of this chamber opera is striking. The leading role of Vivier is sung by a countertenor accompanied by a bass, a baritone and a tenor as alternating roles, as well as a male choir. There are some special features in the orchestra as well, with two clarinets, trumpet, two trombones, two percussionists, upright piano, celesta, electronic organ, harp, four violas, four celli and two double basses.

The opera focuses on the life of the composer Claude Vivier by protocolling the night of his death; in this manner, the most important stations and subjects of his life become present once again.

On 9 May and 10 May 2014 (8 PM) there will be two more performances in the Muffathalle and on 7 May (6:45 PM), before the world premiere, Peter Ruzicka will meet Marko Nikodijevic for an interview at the Gasteig in Munich.
