Content:

A ring of counterfeiters is camping out in the middle of New York, on the stage of the empty Victoria Theatre. Lord, the head of the ring, Alfredo, the ingenious graphic artist and Sig, a former prompter, camp between old theatre brochures and dusty props. After weeks of work, Alfredo has finally succeeded in counterfeiting hundred-dollar bills so that they look very real, and the freshly printed bills are drying on the clothesline. But one question has yet to be answered: how to safely get the fake bills into circulation? A shy knock on the door alarms the trio of crooks – but instead of the dreaded police, Penny Touchwood enters the stage. The young novice actress from the country thinks Lord and his friends are real theatre people and asks them for an engagement. A little later, Penny leaves the theatre brimming with joy, having been accepted for a role and with a fake hundred-dollar bill that she is to change at the nearby bank. Everything goes fine and she arrives the next morning for a “rehearsal”. Much to Lord’s displeasure, she has also brought along O’Brian, a policeman who is also a big theatre fan. Instead of being able to use Penny for changing fake bills on a large scale, the gangsters now see themselves forced to really put on some theatre. They rehearse a bold new musical version of Schiller’s “The Robbers”, in which both O’Brian with his friends from the police choir and also Lord’s girlfriend Rusty and her striptease colleagues are supposed to appear. All work enthusiastically, preparing for the upcoming premiere, but then a hundred-dollar bill fluttering around and a series of suspicious details start O’Brian thinking ...
