AULODIE by Peter Ruzicka in Switzerland

The oboist Albrecht Mayer and the Musikkollegium Winterthur will perform the Swiss premiere of Peter Ruzicka’s “AULODIE” for oboe and chamber orchestra on 22 January 2014 in Winterthur, with the composer conducting.

Albrecht Mayer gave the world premiere of the work with the SHMF Orchestra under the composer’s direction on 5 August 2011 in Salzau.

Peter Ruzicka on AULODIE:
“My oboe concerto AULODIE, composed in 2011, is made up of seven scenes merging into each other of various densities, durations and instrumental balance. The sound formation accompanying the solo instrument consists of 20 strings, 3 percussionists, harp, piano and celesta. All seven scenes begin with an identical musical shape. This opens up the space for ‘sound discourses’ which only seem to receive the impulse for their continuation whilst they are actually sounding.
‘Aulos’ was an ancient Greek instrument that was played at special occasions: as a pugnacious working song, mourning song, wedding music, dance of weapons or at satyr plays that could end up in a wild frenzy. In AULODIE, too, emotional borderline situations determine the seven scenes of the composition. In so doing, the music often seems to pause, listening to itself in retrospect, pointing out events that have sounded previously. AULODIE is perhaps the work of mine that is most ‘like a novel.’”

Further performances in Switzerland by the German world premiere soloist and the Musikkollegium Winterthur (a two-time ECHO Award winner) conducted by Peter Ruzicka will take place on 23 January in Biel (Kongresshaus, 7:30 PM) and on 24 January 2014 in Chur (Theatre, 8 PM).
