“The Canterville Ghost“: Marius Felix Lange’s New Opera Given World Premiere

Oscar Wilde‘s famous horror story of the ”The Canterville Ghost“ that is completely demystified by an American family that can be impressed by nothing, is not being adapted for the operatic genre for the first time.

Now the composer Marius Felix Lange has taken up this material, in a new libretto by Michael Frowin, in response to a commission from the Zurich Opera. The premiere will take place on 23 November 2013 at the Zurich Opera House. Lange approaches the popular material of the Irish author with wit and refinement. At the centre stands the humiliated castle ghost of Canterville, whose attempts to scare the new inhabitants of his old ruins come to absolutely nought. Indeed, things get even worse. The courageous family apparently makes fun of him, and the cheeky twins torture him with disrespectful attacks. In a state of the greatest desperation, the spirit meets little Virginia, the only daughter of the new owner of the castle. His talk with the gentle, sensitive girl awakens in the world-weary ghost a longing for peace and redemption. With the help of Virginia, who heartily deplores the harassed ghost, the latter finally finds, in death, a peaceful ending to its restless ghostly existence.
