World Premiere of “Angels of Sorrow” by Giya Kancheli in Kronberg

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Kronberg Academy, Giya Kancheli’s new vocal work “Angels of Sorrow” for violin, violoncello, children’s choir and chamber orchestra will be given its world premiere on 5 October 2013 in Kronberg. The performers will be the violinist Gidon Kremer and the cellist Giedre Dirvanauskaite with the Shchedryk Children’s Choir and the Kremerata Baltica directed by Roman Kofman.

The work is dedicated to Mikhail Khodorkovsky on his 50th birthday. Kancheli is simultaneously dedicating it to all victims of violence and despotism.

On 7 October 2013 the work will receive a follow-up performance with the same interpreters during the course of the “Concerto for Human Rights in Russia” in the chamber music hall of Berlin Philharmonie.

Giya Kancheli comments on ”Angels of Sorrow“:
“Contrary to my desire, events taking place in the world subconsciously influence the creative process. I cannot remain indifferent to the endless manifestations of ruthlessness and violence, which is perhaps why sadness and sorrow prevail in my music.
Within my abilities, I tried to use the innocent voices of children and most simple melodic structures to express my attitude to the strength of human spirit – the unbending strength of spirit that elevates it above an immoral regime.”
