Rodion Shchedrin: Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 4 receives Austrian Premiere

Founded in the eleventh century and extended during the baroque period, Ossiach Abbey lies on the shores of Lake Ossiach, surrounded by the scenic mountains of Carinthia, Austria’s southernmost province. It was here that the “Carinthian Summer Music Festival” came into being in 1969, a festival now ranking among the most important in Austria. Since 1972, Villach, the Carinthian city most Mediterranean in character, has been the Festiva’s home away from home.

On 31 July 2013 Rodion Shchedrin’s Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 4 will receive its Austrian premiere during the course of the festival in the Congress Centre of Villach. The performers are the serbian pianist Anika Vavic and the Mariinsky Orchestra St. Petersburg under the direction of Valery Gergiev.

In addition to the 1992 in Washington premiered concerto, Sergei Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 5 will also be part of this concert.
