“Russian Night”: World Premiere of Waltz No. 2 by Dmitri Shostakovich in an Adaptation by Michail Jurowski

An open-air concert entitled “Russian Night” will take place in front of the Gläserne Manufaktur in Dresden on 15 June 2013. The Staatskapelle Dresden directed by Michail Jurowski will present works by Russian composers at this event.

This programme will include the world premiere of Waltz No. 2 from the Suite for Variety Orchestra of Dmitri Shostakovich in an adaptation by Michail Jurowski; this adaptation is notable for the fact that the orchestra dispenses with the saxophone, guitar and accordion. Thus Jurowski has created a highly practical version of this popular waltz that will surely be taken up by many orchestras. With the combination of clarinet, bassoon and horn, Jurowski has found a sound that corresponds strikingly to the character of the saxophone.

Shostakovich’s Festive Overture, Op. 96, Modest Mussorgsky’s Prelude to “Khovanshina” (version by Dmitri Shostakovich) and Alexander Arutiunian’s Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra will also be performed at this concert.
