Lin Yang’s “he“ receives World Premiere in Cologne

During the course of the festival “ACHT BRÜCKEN | Musik für Köln” 2013 (30 April – 12 May) Lin Yang’s new work “he” for woodwind quintet and orchestra will be given its world premiere on 11 May 2013.

The festival has been held annually in early May since 2011 and places modern music at the centre of its programme. This year the focus will be on electronic music of yesterday and today.

Lin Yang comments on her work “he” as follows:
“The Chinese word ‘he’ has several meanings, can be pronounced differently and is one of the most frequently occurring words in Chinese philosophy. One could translate it as ‘harmonious’, ’accord’, to correspond with’ or ‘well-balanced’, especially when one speaks of the relationship between different things and objects.
Although the composition centres on this term, it is neither the original intention nor the aim of the work. The original meaning of ’he’ (‘inherent unavoidability’), at different times and in various ways, has either been adapted to the original harmonic language, or else preserved, altered or alienated.”
