Mieczyslaw Weinberg’s Opera “The Idiot” to be Premiered at the Nationaltheater Mannheim

The operas of Mieczyslaw Weinberg, especially “Lady Magnesia” and “The Portrait”, which have recently been newly produced with great success, have met with ever growing public interest and are being taken up in the repertoires of many international opera houses. Weinberg's opera “The Idiot” will now be premiered in its original Russian version on 9 May 2013 at the Nationaltheater Mannheim, conducted by Thomas Sanderling and directed by Regula Gerber.

The opera is based on the novel of the same name by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. It tells of the story of suffering of Prince Myshkin, psychically very unstable and hopelessly in love in the beautiful Nastassia; he is entirely at the mercy of her delaying promises.
