Two World Premieres of Johannes X. Schachtner in March 2013

In early March 2013, two new works by the composer Johannes X. Schachtner, who lives in Munich, will be given their world premieres.

Schachtner's piano trio “Thirteen” will be presented by Julia Galic (violin), Maximilian Hornung (violoncello) and Silke Avenhaus (piano) during the course of the concert series “Chamber Music in Dialogue” at the Bayerische Akademie der Schönen Künste on 5 March 2013 in Munich.

The world premiere of “Five Leipzig Songs” for soprano, violin and string orchestra will follow on 10 March 2013 at the Puchheim Cultural Centre. The “Five Leipzig Songs” are a string orchestra adaptation of individual movements from Schachtner's “Neues Leipziger Liederbuch”. The performers will be Maria Pitsch (soprano) and the Puchheim Strak-Orchestrer directed by the composer.

Johannes X. Schachtner on his piano trio “Thirteen”:
“The 13th is frequently associated with something supernumerary in our western culture; the dozen seems simply too perfect, as a number and as an amount. Thus the number 13 has always had a great fascination for me when composing - there is not actually any provision for it in our well-tempered twelve-tone system. On the other hand, it is indeed found in the Fibonacci number sequence very much loved by me for all kinds of structures. Thus my piano trio is both an homage to and a working-off of this number and the numerous associations that I make with 13. In the different episodes that develop out of an asymmetrical ostinato, there is always something ‘supernumerary’ that breaks open the atmosphere or structure, that furthers or hinders the development or forms a counterpoint - for example, a recurring ‘13th note’ - often between the piano’s F and F-sharp - either expands or disturbs the chromaticism, as the case may be.”
