Ferran Cruixent’s “Grand Chef“ receives World Premiere in Reutlingen

The new concerto work “Grand Chef” for percussion and large orchestra by the Catalonian composer Ferran Cruixent will be given its world premiere on 14 January 2013 at the Stadthalle in Reutlingen during the New Year’s Concert of the Württemberg Philharmonic Reutlingen.

The work is dedicated to the percussionist Peter Sadlo, who will present the world premiere together with the Württemberg Philharmonic Reutlingen conducted by the Swedish conductor  Ola Rudner.

Ferran Cruixent comments on his work as follows:
“The composition ‘Grand Chef’ is dedicated to Peter Sadlo and is in two movements.  The first movement (‘Le Sommelier’) is a slow movement lasting about 7 minutes. I wrote the movement in memory of my friend Deinhart Goritzki (former violist in the Munich Philharmonic – and an orchestral colleague of Peter Sadlo), who unfortunately left us recently, and was both an outstanding cook and an excellent sommelier.
Steel drums in pentatonic combinations, wine glasses, glockenspiel, glass chimes as well as tympani sounds appear in a fine, delicate atmosphere. In addition, this movement is enriched by an echo of the American Christmas standard song ‘I'll be Home for Christmas’.
The second and final movement (‘Le Grand’) reveals the true hectic of kitchen reality. A set-up of kitchen pots and pans is used here, bringing the action-packed and virtuoso rabbiato passages to life. After the solo cadenza, majestic chords lead us to the finale of this kitchen giant, where a final quotation awaits us with which the piece bids farewell.”

The concert will be recorded live by SWR on this evening.
