Claus-Steffen Mahnkopf is 50

Claus-Steffen Mahnkopf will be celebrating his 50th birthday on 22 October 2012. "I am a composer who always continues working consistently, thereby emphatically insisting on the freedom of art and the artist," he says about himself. What is astonishing for this metier is his confession to thinking quite consciously in ten-year periods concerning the development of his works, so as to find the appropriate concentration for each individual work.

"I am also a composer," says Mahnkopf, "who is well aware of German history and is concerned with coming to terms with it (one need only recall my compositions relating to Daniel Libeskind and my new piece 'void – kol ischa asirit’).“ At the present time, Mahnkopf is occupied with a piece in memory of his late wife. "I was married to an exceptional Jewish philosopher of religion from Rome who died tragically young in 2011. This is a subject that will painfully occupy me in my music during the coming years."

Recordings of the complete works for piano of Claus-Steffen Mahnkopf performed by the pianist Ermis Theodorakis have just been issued on the Neos label (Neos 11207).
On 24 November 2012 the SWR Radio Symphony Orchestra Stuttgart directed by Rupert Huber will present the world premiere of Mahnkopf's new work "void – kol ischa asirit" for large orchestra in Stuttgart. On 8 December 2012 there will follow the world premiere of the work "Hommage à Daniel Libeskind, Vol. II“ for six players performed by the Ensemble SurPlus.

You can learn more about the composer and these new pieces in a special article about Claus-Steffen Mahnkopf that will appear in the autumn edition of our Sikorski Magazine 4/2012.
