Berlin Konzerthaus: German Premiere of Mieczyslaw Weinberg`s Opera “Congratulations”

On 23 September 2012 the Berlin Konzerthaus will present the German premiere of 1982 opera “Congratulations” by Mieczyslaw Weinberg (based on the play “Mazl tov” by Sholem Aleichem), in a version for chamber ensemble by Henry Koch. The Potsdam Chamber Academy will be conducted by Vladimir Stoupel.

In this piece, a kitchen becomes the temporary “place of refuge for the discontented”: in the affluent household of a Jewish lady in Odessa at the turn of the twentieth century, Belya is busy in the kitchen preparing a festive dinner for the upcoming engagement of the daughter of the house. The widowed cook laments her tedious work and her lonely life without her husband. Several persons of the “lower class” come to visit, keeping Belya from working whilst singing songs of mourning about love, money, alcohol and politics.

The operatic premiere is part of the Kurt Sanderling Festival organised by the Berlin Konzerthaus to mark the 100th birthday of the great conductor who died last year in Berlin.
