Giya Kancheli at the 40th Istanbul Music Festival

At the 40th Istanbul Music Festival there will be one world premiere and two Turkish premieres of works by the Georgian composer Giya Kancheli.

On 11 June 2012 the Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra (BIPO) under the direction of Andres Mustonen will perform Kancheli`s orchestral work “Lingering” at the Hagia Eirene Museum. This work was commissioned by the music festival with the support of the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.

The composer about his new work:

“A half century ago, the term ‘lingering’ would hardly have occurred to me. But at my age, a person's thoughts circle both around the life one has lived and around hope for better living conditions in the future. And despite the global problems with which humanity is faced, there burns within me a lingering hope for a happy future.”

At this concert the works “Styx” for violin, choir and orchestra as well as “Diplipito” for violoncello, countertenor and orchestra will be given their Turkish premieres. “Styx” will be presented by Gidon Kremer (violin), the Warsaw Philharmonic Choir and the Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra; in "Diplipito," the orchestra will be supported by Mamuka Gaganidze (countertenor) and Giedre Dirvanauskaite (violoncello). Here, too, the works will be directed by the Estonian conductor Andres Mustonen.

Before the concert, Giya Kancheli will be presented with an award for his life's work.
