Austrian Premiere of “Van Gogh`s Letters” by Grigori Frid

The Austrian premiere of Grigori Frid's chamber opera “Van Gogh`s letters” will be given at the Salzburg cultural forum “Odeion” on 17 April 2012 during the course of the JugendTheaterTage (Youth Theatre Days).

This opera was written in 1975, shortly after the composer`s 60th birthday, and is based on the vivid correspondence between Vincent van Gogh and his brother Theo. At the centre of focus stands the tragic figure of an artist who, at the end of his life and ravaged by a disastrous nervous disease, proudly declared: “I have paid for my work with my life.” Frid explained that he tried to understand and fathom the powers that helped this man to overcome his suffering and to find what his calling in life was.

Another performance will take place on the following day, 18 April 2012 (11 AM).
