World Premiere: “Faust Project” with Harald Schmidt by Moritz Eggert

Moritz Eggert, originally from Heidelberg and now living in Munich, has found in Harald Schmidt a truly prominent partner for his “Faust Evening” on 16 March 2012 at the Jahrhunderthalle in Bochum. Together with the famous television star, actor, literary man and cabaret artist, the Bochum Symphony conducted by Steven Sloane will present the world premiere of a “Faust Project” on 16 March 2012 at the Jahrhunderthalle in Bochum.

Alongside the musical contributions compiled by Moritz Eggert, some of which he will also play on the piano (including music by other composers such as Robert Schumann and Alfred Schnittke), texts dealing with the Faust theme by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Thomas Mann, Helmuth Krausser and other authors will be read aloud.

His Faust Project, also designated by Eggert as a musical phantasmagoria, is not merely intended to be the representation of the much-discussed complex of works, but a kind of collection of musical curios. “It will have the special attraction of working with stylistically extreme contrasts,” Eggert explains. “The ‘Faust’ plot (the various works used refer, after all, to different versions of the material, not only to Goethe) is reduced to only three persons: Faust (high baritone), Mephisto (low baritone) and Gretchen (soprano). Solos, duos and trios are to be represented with this constellation of figures; the three singers are constantly present on stage as part of a ‘talk show.’ Then there is a choir that is also involved the whole time.”

Important for Moritz Eggert is the role of Harald Schmidt, who is intended, by all means, to remain himself in his individual characteristics and roles within this environment. Thus, there arises a stimulating mixed-form with many ironic refractions out of this confrontation with the classic concert format and the collision with the format of the Harald Schmidt Show.
