Four Premieres of Xiaoyong Chen in Beijing

On 12 March 2012 there will be four Chinese premieres all at once of works by Xiaoyong Chen, the Chinese composer resident in Hamburg, at the Beijing Concert Hall.

The China National Symphony Orchestra conducted by Jonathan Stockhammer will present Chen's works “Warp” for orchestra, “Floating Colours,” “Colours of Dreams” and "Speechlessness, Clearness and Ease.”

The composer has supplied the following comments on “Warp” and “Speechlessness, Clearness and Ease:”

“I have chosen the English word ‘warp’ for the title of this piece because contains several associative meanings, e.g. distortion, chain, time-shift. (…) My central compositional idea is closely connected with the particularities of the Chinese language. One and the same syllable changes its meaning depending on the tone level upon which it is spoken.”

“The title ‘Speechlessness, Clearness and Ease’ consists of three Chinese characters: yin — speechlessness, xi — clearness and yi — ease, inner well-being. On the one hand they express three fundamental states of being, musical characters which can be variously combined or juxtaposed with one anther. On the other hand, the ambiguity of the individual words can give rise to many different associations. In a similar way sounds derived from a short quotation from the book Laotse are transformed by the ensemble. The music oscillates between illusion and reality, between notes and noise, between the sounds of the real world and of music. This musical complexity is comparable to my own existence, my new identity. Can we really understand other cultures? Can we mix two such different bodies of sound? All I know is that something new has been created.”
