Giya Kancheli's “Ilori” Given Finnish Premiere

Giya Kancheli`s Ilori” received its world premiere in a version for saxophone quartet and orchestra (Arr.: Nikoloz Memanishvili) in Basle in November 2011, performed by the Raschèr Saxophone Quartet and the Basle Symphony Orchestra. A few days later the work was given its German premiere in Dresden. Both performance were conducted by Dennis Russell Davies.

The Finnish premiere will now be given in Kotka on 22 February 2012, again performed by the Raschèr Saxophone Quartet, this time accompanied by the Kymi Sinfonietta conducted by Yasuo Shinozaki.

"Ilori" is a joint commission of the Basle Symphony Orchestra, the Dresden Philharmonic and the Kymi Sinfonietta. The adaptation was made thanks to the encouragement of the Raschèr Saxophone Quartet, for whom Kancheli already composed his "Amao omi."

Giya Kancheli comments on his concerto work as follows:

"'Amao omi' (Senseless War) is the title of a poem by Washa Pshavela. This is how I named the original version of my work for saxophone quartet and chamber choir composed in 2005, three years prior to the tragic events (Caucasus War) in August 2008. I decided to give the new version for saxophone quartet and orchestra, adapted by the young composer Nika Memanishvili, the name of the Ilori Church because the feelings of regret and outrage expressed in this work correspond best to my emotions in view of the shameful deeds described above."
