Content:

Marie, daughter of the Scottish Laird MacGregor, and Count Douglas want to get married. After her father has given this union his blessing, the Count reports that he was attacked in the forest and rescued by an unknown man. Marie and her father fear that Ratcliff is this unknown man. As a student, Ratcliff has come to the castle and fallen in love with Marie. She had refused him, however, similarly to the way Marie’s mother had once loved Ratcliff’s father but then broken off the relationship. As if under a compulsion, Ratcliff now thinks he must kill any man who is interested in Marie. Attempting to murder Douglas, he is wounded by the latter. Douglas does not kill him, however, since he recognises in Ratcliff the unknown man who had helped him in the forest. The injured Ratcliff comes to Marie and she binds the wound. The scene, at first one of reconciliation, ends tragically: Ratcliff kills Marie, then her father and finally himself.
