Content:

The first act describes Fausts origin, studies in Wittenberg, gigantic thirst for knowledge and the incantation of the devil. A more extended dispute with the diabolical spirit Mephistopheles lasts 24 years. The second act is about the serviceability of the spirit, with whom Faust also talks about hell and its hierarchy. One experiences Fausts flight over the countries of the earth and his travels to hell and heaven. The recognition that Paradise remains closed to him and that a hellish end is in store for him disturbs him deeply. After the shock he has suffered, Faust leads a wild life as a magician who proves his power with malevolent jokes. The attempt at a conversion through an experienced physician is followed by a new event. The beautiful Helena crosses his path several times; she (like all the other female roles) is revealed to be the she-devil Mephostophila in disguise. The fear of the impending horrible end leads Faust to three intense wails. Sneering jeers of the hellish spirits are inserted, and then a large ballet act which conjures up the apparitions of the Walpurgis nights. The third act is about the triumph of the devil. After Faust has taken leave of his students, he is guided by the devil. A spiritual epilogue warns posterity of any kind of pact with evil.
