The 17-year-old Johannes Bückler was once brutally whipped in public due to a minor robbery. A notorious Schinderhannes, a German Robin Hood, has developed out of the humiliated boy; he fights with his band against all those who oppress people. Princes and usurers are robbed and the stolen goods given to the poor and Schinderhannes enjoys great popularity among the people. During the carnival season he appears in a village inn in the disguise of a French marquis. When the policeman comes to arrest him, he escapes through a hole in the roof. His beloved Julchen, who has a child by him and lives with him, has no other desire but to live a normal life. He is finally ready to grant Julchen’s wish. He wants to move with her over the Rhein and become a soldier. He secretly leaves his band. On the ferry, however, both are arrested by the policeman Adam and brought to Mainz to appear in court. Schinderhannes is sentenced to death and executed.
