International Shostakovich Days 2011 in Gohrisch

The International Shostakovich Days in Gohrisch will be held for the second time from 16 to 18 September in the Saxon spa town of Gohrisch. Last year, the birth year of the new festival, the Sächsische Zeitung's headline read "Gohrisch has arrived in the musical world." This success was also outwardly underlined by the unveiling of a Shostakovich bust intended to commemorate the great Russian composer's historic stay in this idyllic town.

For three days in 2011 as well, renowned artists will again be invited for a carefully coordinated programme in the town where the Eighth String Quartet was composed. Among the performances will be the German premiere on 16 September of the Chamber Symphony, Op. 49a adapted from Dmitri Shostakovich's 1st String Quartet by Rudolf Barschai.

The Gohrisch International Shostakovich Prize, posthumously awarded last year to Rudolf Barschai, will be presented to the legendary conductor Kurt Sanderling in 2011.

After Krzysztof Meyer at last year's Shostakovich Days, this year it will be the Russian-American composer Lera Auerbach whose chamber works will accompany and enrich the programme of the Festival. Lera Auerbach is the 'Capell Compositrice' of the Staatskapelle Dresden during this concert season.
