New DVD: Sophia – Biography of a Violin Concerto

By the term biography we usually mean the presentation of a person's life - a public or cultural figure of the past or present. The filmmaker Jan Schmidt-Garre has now expanded the genre to include a film that is meant to be the biography of one of the most important compositions of the present day. "Sophia – Biography of a Violin Concerto" is concerned with the composition of the Second Violin Concerto "In tempus praesens" by Sofia Gubaidulina, premiered in Lucerne in August 2007 by Anne-Sophie Mutter and the Berlin Philharmonic under the direction of Simon Rattle. This instrumental concerto is one of the most frequently performed works of contemporary music today and has already been premiered in many countries of the world. After the already legendary recording with Anne-Sophie Mutter and the London Symphony Orchestra under Valery Gergiev, a new recording on the BIS label will soon be released with Vadim Gluzman and the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra under Jonathan Nott.

Jan Schmidt-Garre's film, created for ARTE and Swiss Television and nominated for the Prix Italia, is now available on DVD. It accompanies Anne-Sophie Mutter during her study of the work and the orchestral rehearsals up until the world premiere – a very personal portrait of a magnificent artist and an important composer that grants us deep insights into their musical accomplishments and into the daily work of Sofia Gubaidulina.
