Shostakovich's Eighth at the Bremen Musikfest 2011

Musikfest Bremen 2011

Bremen and its environs, the so-called North German metropolitan region of Bremen-Oldenburg, are once again completely focussed on this music festival from 27 August until 17 September 2011.

Debuts will be celebrated by Korea's Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, the Enrico Pieranunzi Quintet, the ensembles "Chanticleer" and "Spark" and the Latvian conductor Andris Nelsons, among others. The Symphony No. 8 in C minor, Op. 65 of Dmitri Shostakovich will be performed on 31 August 2011 by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra (one of the twenty best orchestras in the world) directed by Andris Nelsons.

The composition of the work was directly influenced by World War II. "In a broad and apparently endlessly flowing of melody," wrote Sabine Siemon 1995, "with the low strings playing a funeral march rhythm in the background, the composer creates, already in the first movement, an image of the grief and rebellion of man subjected to torture."
