New Philharmonie Westfalen: German Premiere of Andrey Eshpay's “Saxophone Concerto”

Andrey Eshpay's "Concerto for Soprano Saxophone and Orchestra," composed during the mid-1980s, will be given its German premiere in Bottrop on 15 May 2011. This is also the day of Eshpay's 86th birthday.

It will be performed by the Neue Philharmonie Westfalen with saxophonist Jan Schulte-Bunert, conducted by Rastislav Štúr, principal conductor of the Opera of the Slovak National Theatre in Bratislava.

Eshpay, born in Kozmodemyansk, Russia in 1925, received his first musical training from his father and studied at the Moscow Music College after the war, where he later taught. For the most part, however, he was active as a freelance composer. Aram Khachaturian and Sergei Prokofiev were among the composers who influenced him most strongly.
