Johannes X. Schachtner: World Premiere of “Neues Leipziger Liederbuch” and “an/marien/dacht” in Munich

Johannes X. Schachtner's vocal cycle “Neues Leipziger Liederbuch” for soprano, baritone, violin and violoncello will receive its world premiere on 4 May 2011 during the course of a Schachtner portrait concert at the Kulturzentrum Messestadt in Munich Riem. In addition, Schachtner's “Es waren zwei Königskinder” for the same ensemble and his “Epitaph” for violin solo will also be on the programme of this portrait concert for the young Munich composer.

In November 2007 Schachtner became acquainted with the four poets Mara Genschel, Norbert Lange, Bertram Reinecke and Johanna Schwedes, all former students of the Leipzig Literature Institute, on the occasion of a festival in Hamburg.

Johannes X. Schachtner has supplied the following commentary on the composition of the work:

“It was still during this festival week that I set the poem 'Märchen' (Fairytale) of Johanna Schwedes for soprano and piano; shortly thereafter followed the poem 'Schlaflied' (Lullaby) of Norbert Lange. The first four poems of this cycle were finished in the spring and the first partial performances were given in Munich. Three years later, the cycle of nine lieder is now complete.”

The interpreters at the premiere at the Messestadt Cultural Centre in Munich will be Maria Pitsch (soprano), Peter Neff (baritone), Helena Berg (violin) and Cäcilia Altenberger (violoncello).

On 11 May 2011, the world premiere of Schachtner's “an/marien/dacht” will also take place at the Messestadt Cultural Centre. During the course of the concert “New Music for Three Zithers” the Senkblei Trio, consisting of Leopold Hurt, Reinhilde Gamper and Martin Mallaun, will present the work for two descant zithers and bass zither. Schachtner has dedicated it to Leopold Hurt, a composer and zither player living in Hamburg.
