Daniel Smutny: World Premiere of “Partita sopra diverse Sonate” in Zurich

The second movement of Daniel Smutny’s “Auf den Flügeln des Gesangs”, entitled “Symbolon,” received its world premiere on 22 February 2010 at the Museum Villa Stuck in Munich.

On 4 February 2011, the world premiere of the movement entitled "Partita sopra diverse Sonate" will be premiered by Volker Hemken for bass clarinet solo during the “1. Bassclarinet Symposium” in Zurich.

The composer has supplied the following commentary of this entire work, “Auf den Flügeln des Gesangs:”

“In ‘Auf den Flügeln des Gesangs’ I was concerned (as in most of my pieces) with a highly differentiated musical language. Very special sound forms and playing techniques come together with a kind of singing that has a remote effect. The piece alternates back and forth between two imagined ideas: the figure of ‘Arlecchino’ and the very slow singing, hardly perceptible, as if from the greatest distance. Harlequin, called Arlecchino in Italian, is a servant character from the Renaissance Commedia dell’arte of the Renaissance. He is usually dressed in a colourful patchwork outfit made out of rhombus-shaped materials, wearing a cap with horns made of cloth with a cock’s feather or fox tail with a black half-ask, also revealing a bump or beginning of a horn on his forehead. His name derives from “little devil” in Italian - (H)ellechin(n)o. In the 21st canto of the Inferno of his Divine Comedy, Dante Alighieri mentions a demon named Alichino (meaning ‘ice-treader’). The line of the poem of the title is investigated in different stages: the whirring movement of the wings, the bird-flight apparently calm and noble from afar, the musical decoration of an extended song arc, the intangible rapture of a traditional tone, but also the insanity, the virtuosic gyrations of Arleccino in a lightness with virtuoso Bravura.”
