Flamenco sin Fin – Premiere of Ali-Zadeh's ”Muğflagamenco” in Amsterdam

The Nieuw Ensemble Amsterdam, accompanied by the Mugam singer Zabid Nabizadeh will perform the world premiere of the new piece "Muğflagamenco" by the Azerbaijani composer Franghiz Ali-Zadeh during the course of the "Netherlands Flamenco Biennale 2011."

The performance will take place during the concert "Flamenco sin Fin" (Contemporary Flamenco Music) on 30 January 2011 at the Muziekgebouw in Amsterdam. Ed Spanjaard will conduct the Nieuw Ensemble and the Mugam singer.

The Flamenco scene and many contemporary performers will come together at the third Biennale being held from 21 until 30 January in the cities of Rotterdam, Utrecht and Amsterdam.

Ali-Zadeh has provided the following commentary on the text used in her new piece "Muğflagamenco:"

"The text was written by the magnificent poet Aliağa Vahid (1895-1965), who in the 20th century wrote in the special seven-line poetic form of the so-called ghasele, to which contemporary Mugam artists frequently had recourse. (Mugams are primarily sung to ghaseles by Nizami, Fuzuli and Nasimi – poets of the Islamic Renaissance.)
The ghasele has no title, but has its meaning in the respect of the beauty of art and human things..
Several strophes from ghaseles will be sounded in the Spanish language – where Flamenco is sung.
In my opinion, 'Muğflagamenco' is the first example of a connection between Mugam and Flamenco. Whether this succeeds depends primarily on the singer. His task is very difficult."
