Commander Kobayashi represents a new form of music theatre developed by the Berlin opera company novoflot: the serial opera which can repeatedly be extended by new episodes. Without any shame, novoflot orientates itself on the format of the cinema outer-space saga. The hero of all the episodes, Commander Kobayashi, leads the spaceship La Fenice with a handful of
space-travellers, the so-called hermenauts, in a puzzling search through space and time, a wild goose chase through a gigantic universe, incessantly surging as from inside and from outside against the wall of the scull, that wants to be understood or at least survived. The series is opened by the pilot episode Four Hermenauts in which the four crew members of La Fenice
are respectively introduced by four different composers Moritz Eggert presents us his personal favourite figure, Go; the remaining hermenauts are portrayed by Helmut Oehring, Jennifer Walshe, Aleksandra Gryka, Ricardas Kabelis and Juha Koskinen.
