Würzburg: Premiere of Claus-Steffen Mahnkopf’s “Angela Nova 2”

The world premiere of the piece entitled “Angela Nova 2” for soprano by Claus-Steffen Mahnkopf will be given during the conference “Creativity - Structure and Emotion” on 9 October 2010 at the Würzburg Music Academy.

The conference is part of a congress of the German Society for Music Theory. The soloist at the concert will be Almut Hellwig.
”Angela Nova” already received its premiere in the version for soprano and ensemble on 4 May 2000 in Munich, performed by Monika Meier-Schmid (soprano) and the Ensemble SurPlus under the direction of James Avery.

In the printed edition of “Angela Nova” (SIK 8629), due to be issued soon, Mahnkopf includes the following quotation of Walter Benjamin:

”There is a picture by Paul Klee entitled Angelus Novus. It shows an angel that looks as if he were about to move away from something, but then freezes. His eyes are wide open, his mouth is open and his wings spread out. This is how the angel of history must look. He has turned towards the face of the past. Where a chain of events appears before us, he sees one single catastrophe, relentlessly heaping ruins upon ruins and hurling them before his feet. He would like to like there, awaken the dead and pick up the pieces. But a storm is blowing from Paradise; it has got caught in his wings with such violence that the angel can no longer close them. This storm inexorably propels him into the future, to which he turns his back, whilst the heap of ruins rises up to heaven before him. What we call progress is this storm.”
