Grigori Frid will celebrate his 95th birthday

On Wednesday, 22 September 2010, the Russian composer Grigori Frid will celebrate his 95th birthday. He is the creator of the chamber opera “The Diary of Anne Frank,” a work which is performed all over the world.

On this occasion, a film team from Dublin went to Moscow at the beginning of the month in order to make a documentary film about Frid and “The Diary of Anne Frank”.

Frid began his musical studies in Irkutsk, completing them in 1935 at the Moscow Conservatory. From 1936 until 1939 he taught music theory there and composition at the Music School of the Conservatory from 1947 until 1961.

The works of Shostakovich, Stravinsky, Schönberg and Berg were decisive for Frid’s compositional confrontation with the music of the 20th century.
