6th Roche Commission for Sofia Gubaidulina

Roche Commission

On Saturday, 28 August 2010, Sofia Gubaidulina was awarded the 6th Roche Commission during the course of a ceremony of the Swiss pharmaceutical concern Roche in Buonas am Zuger See.

This is an orchestral commission from the firm Hoffmann-La Roche, which since 2003 has been granting commissions to contemporary composers administrated by the Lucerne Festival and premiered by the Cleveland Orchestra under the direction of Franz Welser-Möst in Lucerne. During the following season, the work will also be presented in Carnegie Hall in New York and in Cleveland.

So far, composers awarded Roche Commissions have included Harrison Birtwistle, George Benjamin and Toshio Hosokawa.

The 78-year-old composer could not accept the award personally at the ceremony due to illness. In her words of gratitude, which she conveyed to the Roche concern, Gubaidulina emphasised the cultural importance of the Roche Commissions:

”High art, which is not infrequently uncomfortable and does not conform to the taste of the masses, constantly requires financial support. Without initiatives like the Roche Commissions, it gathers dust on the shelves and in the desk drawers of its creators. The way in which a society treats its creative minds, lateral thinkers and artistic innovators reveals a great deal about the state of that society. I therefore thank Hoffmann-La Roche not only personally, but also on behalf of all people to whom the preservation of high culture is a concern close to their hearts.”
